Suspect in UCLA shooting remembered as good student in India

The Latest: Slain UCLA professor's wife pays him tribute

After killing his estranged wife in a Minneapolis suburb, Sarkar packed two guns, drove from Minnesota to Los Angeles, parked in his old neighborhood, took a bus to campus and shot Klug in the professor’s office Wednesday before taking his own life.

She said she hadn’t mentioned any recent animosity with Sarkar.

Jean Johnson, the grandmother of victim Ashley Hasti, said Friday that Hasti was smart and spent her late teens and early 20s visiting China, India and Tibet.

She was found dead of a gunshot wound at her home in the small Minnesota town of Brooklyn Park.

Ashley Hasti married Sarkar in 2011, according to a copy of a marriage license obtained by Reuters.

Officers found a broken window where they believe Sarkar entered Hasti’s home to commit the crime.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation tells The Associated Press Hasti was on the list.

The official was not authorized to publicly discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life.

The university was shut down for the day but reopened on Thursday and a vigil was planned later in the day to honor Klug.

“During this extremely hard time for our family, we are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support”.

She asks that her family’s privacy be respected so they can mourn.

There, a former student with a grudge, Mainak Sarkar, killed a woman, police said.

“He was a little bit of a loner”, said Ajit Mal, an engineering professor who taught Sarkar in one of his earliest classes at UCLA.

“We believe she was deceased prior to the UCLA shooting”, Brooklyn Park Deputy Chief Mark Bruley said.

Police would not disclose the woman’s name.

The law enforcement official said Hasti was the name of the woman on Sarkar’s list. He described them as quiet.

Records in Hennepin County, Minnesota, show Hasti married Sarkar in 2011. He graduated in 2013 with a engineering. “He’d say, “I don’t know how to answer that” or ‘I don’t know what that means.’ He was just very stubborn”. “Thank you for being my mentor”.

One of his friends in Durgapur recalled that Sarkar was good in sports.

The dissertation, approved by Klug and four colleagues, is dedicated to Sarkar’s dead mother, Ira Sarkar. It’s titled, “Coupled Cardiac Electrophysiology and Contraction using Finite Element”.

The auto could provide additional clues in the killing spree by Mainak Sarkar, who left behind a trail of evidence that led investigators to another victim.

“Sarkar’s face looked familiar when I saw his picture in the media today”, said Sumita Mukherjee, who was secretary to the principal at St. Michael’s when Sarkar attended.

“Apparently he’s harbored those feelings over the past three years since his graduation” but investigators hadn’t found any “trigger event” that would explain why he chose to kill now, Los Angeles police Capt. William Hayes said.

Security personnel escort people from the University of California Los Angeles campus after two people were confirmed dead following a shooting at the facility, June 1, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

Sarkar drove from Minnesota to California with two semi-automatic handguns, multiple rounds of ammunition and several magazines. He killed himself immediately after fatally shooting Klug, he said.

Sarkar fatally shot his former UCLA professor, Bill Klug, to death on Wednesday and then killed himself. In March, Sarkar posted online that Klug had “made me really sick” after stealing computer code from him.

It ends with: “Your enemy is your enemy”. But your friend can do a lot more harm.

Even before his death, Klug had been hailed as a caring father and gifted educator who inspired his students. Los Angeles police chief sa… Beck says UCLA asserts it was all in Sarkar’s imagination.

The list contained the names of UCLA engineering professor Bill Klug, who was slain in the murder-suicide, another UCLA professor, and the Minnesota woman.

Neiman says the bomb squad plans to sweep the auto as a precaution to make sure there are no explosives inside before other officers examine the vehicle further.

Police have not publicly identified the woman or the unharmed professor, who also belonged to UCLA’s engineering faculty.

Beck says it appears that mental issues were involved and says Sarkar’s dispute with Klug appears to be tied to Sarkar thinking the professor released intellectual property that harmed Sarkar.
